In a Humanity First press conference, the former Prime Minister’s son, Sam Win, gave statements that he was abused and suppressed; he also expressed concern that the current Prime Minister of Thibaw is continuing with these human rights abuses. According to Win, the Prime Minister has zero tolerance for freedom of speech. In fact, he had to leave Thibaw and ask for asylum in the United States. Sam Win also stated that he is speaking for the Thibawan people in asking the government to “take a position on human rights violations in Thibaw.” The current Prime Minister in Thibaw refused to comment on the situation.
In the conference, Win commented on the future of oil and gas companies, saying, “I recognize the importance of foreign investment.” He is clearly cognizant of the necessity to bring development to help Thibawan communities economically and socially. However, he stressed that the country first needs to focus on improving the human rights situation and install a democratic system.
