Humanity First is extremely concerned about the issues of human rights in Thibaw with regards to the current Oil and Gas developments. We are the voice of many stakeholders around the world, and we represent them in helping to make sure that the people of Thibaw have freedom to make choices, as well as to lead dignified lives.
During the last few months we’ve been gathering information about the current situation in Thibaw, the organization is very concerned about the following points:
- Repression is real: we’ve been able to confirm from many sources the lack of freedom in the country.
- Udip population concern: We have information to confirm that kidnappings and massive killings have happened lately and there are not indications of any judicial actions taken towards solving those crimes
- We have confirmed that Re-education through labor practices are currently in place by Thibaw’s government. Practices like forced alienation and partial prosecution are common and well documented.
- Humanity First along with Shared Heritage are also concerned about the Massive Teak deforestation currently happening the southern part of the Lai-Ha Valley and Northern foothills of the Pauk Mauntains. The logging practices in the area endangers the existence not only the ecosystem but also the local economy as a whole. Shared Heritage continues to seek the cooperation of the production companies to ensure environmental sustainability in the region.
If interested companies are doing something to solve this crisis, we encourage them to make the public. The only long term solution that Humanity First sees for this tragic situation is the creation of an international consortium of companies with clear development goals for Thibaw’s people and economy. We demand the participation of Oil and Gas companies, the Thibawan Government, The World Bank, and other companies which are interested in participating in the oil and gas development in Thibaw.
We will not tolerate forced labor, and shady management of the revenues of this project. Humanity First is committed with the development of the communities and that will not happen without transparency and under an authoritarian government.
Regards,
Jesus Patino
Humanity First.
